Dean's Message

Photo of Darren DawsonWelcome to the College of Engineering at Kansas State University, where it is indeed an exciting time. We are in the sixth year of the University Engineering Initiative Act, and moving into the second phase of implementing the K-State 2025 vision for the college. We will continue to fine-tune our plan to ensure these two initiatives complement each other as we seek to build a College of Engineering that provides an outstanding undergraduate educational experience, and is also known for outstanding research programs related to energy, health, infrastructure and information technology. Key to this plan is our ambition to improve the reputation of the College of Engineering, while staying true to our core values as a land-grant, applied science university.

To achieve this ambitious goal, we know what we must do. More importantly, we are determined to do it, with a specific plan of action. First, we have launched the Academic Success Center. This new umbrella center has been designed to give students the mentoring, advising and training needed for successful college and career paths. Second, we have developed an Engineering Leadership and Innovation Program. This unique, two-year undergraduate program will train juniors and seniors with the business and team management skills needed for tomorrow’s leaders. Third, we must recruit and retain excellent faculty within the College of Engineering (see our Faculty Development Initiative for more information). The recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty members is critical for ensuring we continue to provide a high-quality educational experience for both current and future students. And Fourth, we must continually upgrade our undergraduate educational facilities and our research infrastructure. Modern and up-to-date educational and research facilities have a tremendous impact on the College of Engineering’s reputation and overall success (see our Undergraduate Facilities Initiative and Research Facilities Initiative for more information).

I encourage you to spend some time on our website. Once you’ve learned even more about our undergraduate and graduate programs, research ventures, academic units, faculty, and other exciting projects and activities in the college, I think you’ll see why Kansas State University is THE choice for an engineering education.

Darren Dawson, Ph.D.
