Dean's Message

Creating a safer, more sustainable and more secure society requires engineering to work alongside the disciplines of health and basic sciences, business, finance and public policy to take on and solve the challenges we’re facing. Our goals must be multi-disciplinary in nature and reside at the intersection among all fields of study.

Higher, bigger, farther, faster, global and more inclusive — all while standing at the forefront of technology and innovation — this is the direction of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University. Welcome to all who seek to share in that destination as we address the needs of our world.

I am honored to serve as the 11^th dean in the more than 150-year history of this exceptional engineering college. Having worked with K-State engineering graduates throughout my career, I knew it to be an outstanding educational institution and I feel fortunate to be a part of the K-State family.

Undergraduate and graduate student success is our top priority. When students are successful, we all succeed. The Carl R. Ice College of Engineering has a foundation of excellence built over the past many decades, so our focus will be on making great into greater. Creating a more diverse, inclusive environment is a key component to achieving success in our global community and economy.

The resulting product from our efforts of working with others to make something of practical use is at its very core what engineering is all about — the reduction to practice of technology to the benefit of society. With its eight academic departments and 14 degree programs, the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering will encourage its undergraduate students to pursue research topics of their own interest and work with graduate students to study that subject area, knowing it will lead to further knowledge and understanding. And down the road, helping those same students to be placed in co-ops, internships and permanent employment positions creates the rewarding experience of starting the next generation of engineers on their career paths.

Lofty and aspirational goals, perhaps, but with engagement, enthusiasm, and a faculty and staff committed to sharing their time, talent and treasure, this is the legacy the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering invites you to be a part of.
