Program Accreditation and Information
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in biological systems engineering at Kansas State University is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Biological and Similarly Named Engineering Programs Criteria.
ABET is a not-for-profit, non-governmental accrediting agency for programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology, and we are recognized as an accreditor by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
ABET accreditation provides assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards of the profession for which that program prepares graduates. In addition, the accreditation process:
- assures that graduates of an accredited program are adequately prepared to enter and continue the practice of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology;
- stimulates the improvement of technical education; and
- encourages new and innovative approaches to technical education and its assessment.
Program educational objectives
Program educational objectives are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation. Program educational objectives are based on the needs of the program’s constituencies.
- Be successfully employed in engineering, science, or other impactful careers.
- Be engaged in professional activities that address complex societal challenges.
- Pursue lifelong learning through additional educational opportunities such as graduate coursework and degrees, professional conferences and training, and participation in professional societies.
- Attain professional registration or other appropriate certifications.
- Make contributions to their chosen profession.
Upon graduating from the K-State environmental engineering program, graduates will have:
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
