The Consortium for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (CESAS) at Kansas State University and its partners hosted the Seventeenth Annual Dialog on Sustainability on “Sustainable Infrastructure” on Saturday morning, July 16, 2022, using Zoom.

This dialog focused on sustainable infrastructure with an emphasis on land improvement. There is a significant increase in federal funding for infrastructure projects related to brownfields and sustainable development in Kansas. One of the goals is to provide public education on the opportunities that are available related to advancing sustainable infrastructure in Kansas. The area in southeast Kansas where mine tailings are present is one opportunity for infrastructure improvement. The soil can be improved by adding organic carbon amendments to improve the soil and planting trees to sequester carbon and produce a useful product. Adding infrastructure to develop sustainable flood plains that have beneficial vegetation will be part of the program. There is a continuing need in Kansas to find good ways to improve soil quality in agricultural operations as part of the dialog to advance sustainability The anticipated audience will include students, faculty, foresters, farmers, leaders, members of communities and environmental organizations.
